The 10-Swing Start-Line Freeze
The 10-Swing Start-Line Freeze is a ball control drill in The Adaptive Golfer app. Train your club to travel through impact toward your intended start line, with slow rehearsal swings and no ball. It trains start line, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.
How to do The 10-Swing Start-Line Freeze
- Stand indoors with enough room for a slow, waist-high rehearsal swing.
- Choose an imaginary target straight ahead and picture a narrow start-line window running from the ball to it.
- Take your normal address, with no ball.
- Make one slow swing at about a quarter to 40 percent speed, then freeze immediately after imaginary impact, when the shaft is about parallel to the ground.
- Look at the clubhead.
- Did it travel through your start-line window?
- Reset fully and repeat for ten slow reps.
- Log your on-line freezes out of ten.
The clubhead moved through the target line and the face looked roughly square.
The clubhead clearly cut across the line, swung sharply away from it, or the face was obviously open or closed.
Treating the freeze as a swing diagnosis. This is a movement-awareness rehearsal: without a ball it cannot tell you your real face or path at impact, only whether your club is traveling toward the line you chose. Keep it slow, or you will freeze too late to see anything.
▲ LEVEL UP
Once you hold the top of your benchmark across three sessions, freeze a little later, with the shaft past parallel, and keep the same count. After that, take the same freeze to the range with a ball and compare the start line you see with the one you rehearsed.
How The 10-Swing Start-Line Freeze is scored
Count your successful attempts out of 10 on-line freezes.
Here is what each handicap band should be hitting (on-line freezes, higher is better):
| HANDICAP BAND | TARGET |
|---|---|
| Scratch (0–2) | — |
| 3–7 | 8–10 |
| 8–13 | 7–8 |
| 14–19 | 6–7 |
| 20+ | 4–6 |
This drill is not from the book. The bands above are ours, derived from the standard the book sets for comparable drills, so every level has a target to clear.
Your result is converted to Practice Strokes Gained against your band, so you always know if you are above, at, or below where you should be.
Log each rep and see whether you are above, at, or below your band — not just the target.
The 5-pillar diagnosis tells you whether this drill is even the thing costing you strokes.
A four-week plan picks your drills and recalculates as your numbers move.
