Block-to-Random Transition
Block-to-Random Transition is a practice system drill from The Adaptive Golfer. A session structure that moves a skill from blocked repetition to random practice, where the real transfer happens. It trains skill transfer, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Here's the Block-to-Random Transition. It's how a skill actually transfers to the course. Block one. Hit ten identical shots and record the score. Then take a five minute break. Block two. Change one variable. The distance, the club, or the shape. Hit ten more and record them. Then break again. Now go random. Ten shots alternating between the two conditions, recorded separately. The random set will score lower than the blocked sets. That difficulty is the learning. Don't drop it because it's harder. After four weeks, your random scores should land within two or three points of your blocked sets. Log every set in The Adaptive Golfer.
How to do Block-to-Random Transition
No physical setup — this governs any skill-block session.
Block 1: ten identical shots, recorded. Five-minute break. Block 2: ten shots with one variable changed (distance, club, or shape), recorded. Five-minute break. Random: ten shots alternating between the two conditions, recorded. The random set scores lower than the blocked sets — that difficulty is the learning. Track all three scores separately.
Eliminate the blocked sets entirely and practice fully randomly, with conditions varied before each shot.
Quietly dropping the random set because it is harder and scores worse. Lower random scores are evidence the skill is being tested, not merely rehearsed.
How Block-to-Random Transition is scored
This is a feel and rehearsal drill, so it is not scored. It pairs with a scored drill.
Log each rep and see whether you are above, at, or below your band — not just the target.
The 5-pillar diagnosis tells you whether this drill is even the thing costing you strokes.
A four-week plan picks your drills and recalculates as your numbers move.
As seen in Chapter 25 — Drill 14 of The Adaptive Golfer. Every drill, benchmark, and plan in the app traces back to the published methodology.
