Worst-Ball Scoring
Worst-Ball Scoring is a practice system drill from The Adaptive Golfer. Play worst-ball short-game from six positions; total strokes, lower is better. It trains pressure application, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Here's Worst Ball Scoring. It loads real pressure onto your short game by forcing you to play the worse of every two shots. Start twenty to forty feet from the flag on a typical chip lie. Light rough, fringe, or a tight apron. Hit two chips from the starting position. Then play the worse of the two outcomes. This is the whole drill. When in doubt, take the ball further from the hole or in the worse lie. Honest selection is where the skill is built. From the worse position, hit two putts and again keep the worse result. Hole out from there and record the total strokes for the position. Then repeat from five more positions for a six position total. For a mid handicap, aim to total thirteen to sixteen strokes. Lower is better. Log every rep in The Adaptive Golfer.
How to do Worst-Ball Scoring
Start 20–40 feet from the flag on a typical chip lie — light rough, fringe, or tight apron.
Hit two chips from the starting position and play the worse outcome. From there hit two putts, take the worse result, and hole out from it. Record the total strokes for the position, then repeat from five more positions for a six-position total.
Use three balls instead of two — worst of three — which raises the bar for the whole drill.
Playing from the better ball when the worse one is "only slightly" worse. The difficulty lives entirely in honest worst-ball selection — when in doubt, take the ball further from the hole or in the worse lie.
How Worst-Ball Scoring is scored
Add up your total strokes across every position. Fewer strokes is better.
Here is what each handicap band should be hitting:
| HANDICAP BAND | TARGET |
|---|---|
| Scratch (0–2) | — |
| 3–7 | 12–14 |
| 8–13 | 13–16 |
| 14–19 | 15–19 |
| 20+ | 19–22 |
Your result is converted to Practice Strokes Gained against your band, so you always know if you are above, at, or below where you should be.
Log each rep and see whether you are above, at, or below your band — not just the target.
The 5-pillar diagnosis tells you whether this drill is even the thing costing you strokes.
A four-week plan picks your drills and recalculates as your numbers move.
As seen in Chapter 25 — Drill 15 of The Adaptive Golfer. Every drill, benchmark, and plan in the app traces back to the published methodology.
