The One-Handed Swing Drill
The One-Handed Swing Drill is a ball control drill from The Adaptive Golfer. A trail-hand-only exaggeration drill that builds the feel of the face rotating to square. A warm-up paired with the Gate Drill. It trains face rotation release, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Here's the One-Handed Swing drill. It builds the feel of the clubface rotating to square, so your strike squares up on its own. Set up to a foam ball, then take your lead hand off the club. You're swinging with the trail hand only. Make a slow, half speed backswing. Notice the face is slightly open here. Now swing through. Feel the forearm roll and the face turn to square through the ball. Let the release finish. That rolling sensation is the motor pattern you're building. Make ten slow rehearsals, then put both hands back on and take the feeling to the Gate Drill. Log every rep in The Adaptive Golfer.
How to do The One-Handed Swing Drill
Take a normal address, then remove your lead hand and swing with the trail hand only. Foam or soft balls are recommended.
Make ten slow, half-speed swings with the trail hand only, attending to the face rotating from slightly open to square and the forearm rolling over. Then replace both hands and hit five balls consciously replicating that sensation, followed by five balls with no conscious thought — just target and swing.
Alternate one-handed rehearsals with normal-swing shots, progressively reducing the rehearsals needed before each normal shot.
Treating it as a way to hit the ball rather than to build a motor pattern. Slow down — the sensation is the product, not the result.
How The One-Handed Swing Drill is scored
This is a feel and rehearsal drill, so it is not scored. It pairs with a scored drill.
Log each rep and see whether you are above, at, or below your band — not just the target.
The 5-pillar diagnosis tells you whether this drill is even the thing costing you strokes.
A four-week plan picks your drills and recalculates as your numbers move.
As seen in Chapter 25 — Drill 4 of The Adaptive Golfer. Every drill, benchmark, and plan in the app traces back to the published methodology.
