The Smart-Target Rehearsal
The Smart-Target Rehearsal is a course strategy drill in The Adaptive Golfer app. Practice choosing a safe target, not the flag, for your next round. It trains decision quality, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.
How to do The Smart-Target Rehearsal
- Think of one approach shot you are likely to face, or picture a green with trouble near one side.
- Picture the flag, the green, and the biggest danger: water, bunker, trees, out of bounds, or a short-sided miss.
- Then say out loud: "My target is [safe area], and my good miss is [safe side]."
- Choose the club that makes that target most likely, and take one slow practice swing while imagining the ball finishing at the safe target.
- Then mark it complete.
The pin is right, with water right. My target is the center-left of the green. My good miss is left. I am taking the club that comfortably carries the front bunker.
Aiming at the flag because it is the obvious target. The flag is where the danger usually lives.
▲ LEVEL UP
Run it before every round for the three hardest holes you will play. Once that is habit, run it on the tee of every hole where a miss costs you a stroke.
How The Smart-Target Rehearsal is scored
Run it once and mark it complete. Doing the rep is the score.
Here is what each handicap band should be hitting (rehearsal complete, higher is better):
| HANDICAP BAND | TARGET |
|---|---|
| Scratch (0–2) | — |
| 3–7 | 1–1 |
| 8–13 | 1–1 |
| 14–19 | 1–1 |
| 20+ | 1–1 |
This drill is not from the book. The bands above are ours, derived from the standard the book sets for comparable drills, so every level has a target to clear.
Your result is converted to Practice Strokes Gained against your band, so you always know if you are above, at, or below where you should be.
Log each rep and see whether you are above, at, or below your band — not just the target.
The 5-pillar diagnosis tells you whether this drill is even the thing costing you strokes.
A four-week plan picks your drills and recalculates as your numbers move.
