The Target Selection Practice

The Target Selection Practice is a course strategy drill from The Adaptive Golfer. Hit ten shots into an aim corridor offset from the flag to break the pull of aiming at pins. It trains aim discipline, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Here's the Target Selection drill. It breaks the habit of aiming straight at every pin. Put a flag at a hundred and fifty yards. This is the pin, and it's tempting. Now set alignment sticks to mark an aim corridor about fifteen feet left of the flag. That offset accounts for the danger on the right. Aim at the corridor, not the flag. Land inside it and you score a point. Land near the flag but outside the corridor and you score zero. Even if it finished closer to the pin. Hit the corridor, then make it harder. Narrow it to ten feet and raise your bar to seven of ten. Log every rep in The Adaptive Golfer.

How to do The Target Selection Practice

SET UP

Place a flag at 150 yards and use alignment sticks to define an aim corridor centered 15 feet left of the flag, simulating a right-miss danger near the pin.

RUN IT

Set your aim point in the corridor and hit ten shots with the explicit goal of landing in the corridor — not near the flag. A corridor shot scores a point regardless of flag proximity; a shot near the flag but outside the corridor scores zero, even if it finishes closer.

PROGRESS

Narrow the corridor from 15 feet to 10 and raise the benchmark to 7 of 10.

COMMON MISTAKE

Aim drifting back toward the flag during address. Use an intermediate target — a spot three feet ahead on the line to your aim point — and set the face to it before the body.
