THE Adaptive Golfer

Eyes Closed Chipping

Eyes Closed Chipping is a performance drill from The Adaptive Golfer. Chip with eyes closed and call the contact, calibrating felt verdict against actual outcome — aiming for 7 of 10 agreement after four weeks. It trains feel calibration, and your result is measured as Practice Strokes Gained against your handicap band.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Here's Eyes Closed Chipping. It calibrates your feel by forcing you to call the contact before you look. Take a standard chip position twenty to thirty feet from the flag on a normal lie. Run phases one and two of your routine normally. Just before the trigger, close your eyes. Keep them closed all the way until the ball lands. Before you open them, state your contact verdict. Solid, thin, fat, or somewhere in between. Then open your eyes, observe the result, and compare. Over time your felt verdict and the actual outcome will converge. For a mid handicap, aim to have your called verdict match the real outcome on seven of ten chips after four weeks. Log every rep in The Adaptive Golfer.

How to do Eyes Closed Chipping

SET UP

Take a standard chip position 20–30 feet from the flag on a normal lie.

RUN IT

Run phases 1–2 of your routine normally, then close your eyes just before the trigger and keep them closed until the ball lands. Before opening, state your contact verdict (solid, thin, fat, or in between). Open, observe the result, and compare. Over time the felt verdict and actual outcome should converge.

PROGRESS

Extend to full wedge shots from 50–80 yards — eyes close at the trigger, open after landing.

COMMON MISTAKE

Opening your eyes before the ball lands, which reinstates visual feedback and erases the calibration value. Trust the feel.
